My father and mother, who spent all of their working lives on a farm about one hundred and sixty miles north of here (at Manitowoc, Wisconsin) and who never had any advantages of organized education (not even a grammar school), always taught me to work hard and to save, always to be optimistic and sunny, and never to be a pessimist of a cynic. They were private enterprisers and rugged but honest individualists.
