Political Parties Splinter Over Social Security Reform
Today, the Social Security system is standing on a cliff, awaiting its fate. Its fate is tied to the fate of millions of Americans. Just next year, in 2016, the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) fund is projected to be fully depleted. If nothing occurs between now and then, the Social Security system will jump off that cliff, resulting in a projected 19 percent reductionto the SSDI benefits that nearly 11 million people rely upon every day. These benefits help people pay for their care, housing, and food. In fact, it is projected that SSDI benefits help keep nearly 3 million Americans out of poverty every year.
