Social Security loophole closing soon, ending a strategy some married couples use to collect more

Abstract

The budget deal signed by President Obama on Monday, aimed at heading off another government shutdown, contained a few bipartisan surprises, including the closure of a Social Security loophole. The loophole is a combination of several Social Security rules that have allowed a strategy generally known as “file-and-suspend,” which will be prohibited starting May 1.
