Emory Richard Johnson, the youngest of eight children, was born near the town of Waupon, Wisconsin, on March 22, 1864. His parents, Eli and Angeline (Nichols) Johnson, who were tillers of the soil, moved to Wisconsin from Buffalo, New York, in 1848, and came from a long lineage extending back to early colonial days.
