Joseph E. Boettner, retired president of the Philadelphia Life Insurance Company, and Davis W. Gregg, former president of The American College, saw the many challenges that confront an aging society, especially those affecting the financial well-being of older men and women. From these concerns they developed the idea of a new research institute that would combine the interests of financial services and social gerontology. The Boettner Institute, named in honor of Joseph E. and Ruth Elizabeth Boettner, was founded in 1986 to enhance research and practice in Financial Gerontology.
